What a Psychiatrist is:

 

Psychiatrist is a specialised  phsysician who is specifically trained to treat psychiatric/mental/mind illnesses using the biomedical approach to mental disorders including the use of psychotropic drugs, Psychotherapies and Somatic therapies. Psychiatrists have to go through a specialised significant training as mentioned under.

 

Educational Qualifications of a Psytchiatrist

Typically the requirements to become a psychiatrist are substantial but differ from country to country.

In India one have to first obtain MBBS degree[Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degrees]. Upon completion, of MBBS , a doctor have to undertake a entrance exam at All-India level to obtain a Residency/Post graduate training to specialize in Psychiatry.

This specialized training is of 3 years. After 3 years of training a written and clinical examination is taken.. After specialist training is successfully completed, the individual have to apply to get with Medical council of India or State medical council and can start a career as a licensed Psychiatrist.

 

Role of a Psychiatrist

 

As part of their evaluation of the patient, Psychiatrists are one of only a few mental health professionals who ,in order to make a diagnosis,  conducts a--1)      Detailed interview of the patient and of the family members too

 

2)      Mental status examination.

 

3)      May conduct physical examinations if required,

 

4)      May order some laboratory tests and EEG,S, and may order Brain Imaging Studies such as CT or, MRI, and PET scanning.

 

5)      The Psychiatrist too must evaluate the patient for any medical problems or diseases that may be the cause of the mental illness.

 

6)      Psychiatrist is the only mental health professional who have the authority to ---

 

a]Prescribe Psychotropic Medicines

 

b] Administer Various Forms Of Psychotherapies To Treat Specific Types Of Mental Illness.

 

c] Use Specialised Somatic Trepapies Like Electroconvulsive Therapy[ Ect], Aversion Therapy, Electrosleep Therapy, Biofeedback Etc

What Psychiatry Means:

The word 'PSYCHIATRY' is derived from the Greek for "healer of the spirit" (ψυχ- [spirit]+ ιατρος (physician]

Psychiatry is a branch of medical sciences which deals with healing the mind by resolving the seymptoms suggestive of a mental ilness.

Its gives athe patient relief from mental suffering due to a certain psychiatric disorder and thus improves the socio economical dysfunction created in the life of the patient.

Psychiatry takes into account biological, psychological, and social/cultural perspectives for creation of a menatl illness, thus the treatment in psychiatry is also a combination of  medications/psychotropic drugs in conjunction with various forms of psychotherapies[Talk Therapy]

Several research papers have shown that the combination of pharmachotherapy and Psychotherapy is proven to be most effective in treatment  of most psychiatric disorders.

Most psychiatric illnesses cannot currently be cured, although recovery may occur. While some have short time courses and only minor symptoms, many are chronic conditions which can have a significant impact on a patients' quality of life and even life expectancy, and as such may be thought to require long-term or life-long treatment. Effectiveness of treatment for any given condition is also variable from individual to individual.

What Psychiatrist do?

When most people think of a psychiatrist, they tend to imagine a figure like Freud - someone who spends repeated sessions with a patient, delving into past issues and talking in terms such as unconscious impulses and defence mechanisms.

In fact, the reality is generally very different. Psychiatrists are doctors with a full medical training. A psychiatrist is a doctor who has gone on to specialise in mental illness, through a training programme lasting at least a further 3-6 years[duration of postgraduation varies in different countries,in India its 3 years].

Psychiatrists are uniquely placed to be able to offer the following services:

• Diagnose psychiatric illness, discuss treatment options and formulate treatment strategies

• Understand physical and psychiatric illness processes, and the interplay between physical state and mental well-being

• Elicit specific information during a detailed psychiatric and medical clerking

• Provide an indication of illness prognosis

• Liaise with other doctors and healthcare professionals, such as psychologists, nurses and therapists, in order to form a cohesive multi-disciplinary treatment plan.

• Prescribe medication - there is a very wide range of medications available for psychiatric illness.
